The Day I arrive

29 July 2008. Coordinates: 8°46′ N 27°24′, Aweil is the capital of the Southern Sudanese state of Northern Bahr Al Ghazal. From the sky, NBaG looks like a green desert.

This is the middle of the rainy season. Heavy rains are flooding areas, destroying tukuls and shelters that are already fragile and precarious, displacing the people, making roads and villages inaccessible by vehicle, not to mention spreading diseases. Mosquitos and insects of all kinds are more agressive than ever.

When I finally land in Aweil Town, my team is as busy as a bee. In addition to the current medical aid provided in the region, we are going to face an outbreak of cholera and displaced populations who need safe drinking water and healthcare very urgently.
